Study Skills

Pupils throughout the school use their Life Education lessons to develop study and revision skills. We draw on the most recent pedagogical ideas and developments in cognitive science to inform our understanding of how pupils learn and revise best.

A day-long programme of events aimed at building academic confidence is put on for pupils entering their GCSE years, with contributions from experienced study skills providers such as Elevate Education. Regular ‘report reading’ days are used to review all pupils’ progress and achievement and provide guidance on how they can improve their skills. There is also a bespoke ‘study skills handbook’ tailored to pupils at Emanuel which is used to support Sixth Form students.

We run two popular annual webinars for parents of pupils in Lower and Middle school to provide tools with which they can support their children to study and manage their time effectively.

Personalised Academic Support

At Emanuel we understand that as every child has their own unique gifts and talents, there will be times when pupils require more personalised academic support.

Please explore this page to find out more about what we offer.

Academic mentoring programme

What is it? A series of one-to-one mentoring sessions with a teacher.

Who is for? GCSE and A level pupils identified by their Head of Year as someone who would benefit from the programme.

Aim? To develop pupils’ study and revision skills to enhance their academic progress.

Programme overview

1st week of mentoring: Introductions, motivation

2nd week of mentoring: Review of ‘How do we learn?’ that pupils have previously been introduced to in life education lessons.

Further weeks: Programme tailored to each student, chosen from the options below:

  • Revision strategies

  • Good study habits

  • Using mark schemes and models

  • Practice makes perfect

  • Connecting concepts

  • How to look things up

A series of prompts, resources and tasks has been created for each of the above pathways for teachers to work through with pupils.

    General academic support club

General academic support club is a space for lower school pupils and Year 9 to be mentored by sixth form subjects specialists. It runs from 4-5pm in the Goddard Room, Library, on Thursdays and is overseen by Miss Hewett.

All are welcome. It is helpful if students bring some work or revision that they are finding tricky so that our mentoring prefect can match them up with a suitable sixth form mentor.

The sixth form mentors are fantastic at using prompts and questions to support students without simply giving them the answers.
