What are you studying and where? What can you say about your science and maths teaching at Emanuel?/ What did you love about Science/your A level subjects? The class atmosphere and friends I had around me played a big part in my enjoyment of physics and maths. Everyone supported each other and helped one another with difficult problems or in the build up to big exams. Being able to attend extra help clubs was also crucial in my development in getting better results, as I found the change between GCSE and A levels a big and eye-opening step! Other teachers were able to explain tricky problems in alternative ways and it made it feel as though all department teachers were looking out for your success.

Why do you think science is important in all our lives?/What does science teach you about the world around you or yourself? Although I am not pursuing a STEM degree, studying maths and physics allowed me to develop my analytical ability, problem-solving and pragmatic approaches, and my technical understanding. I have been able to harness these skills in my degree, actively choosing modules that put these to the test.

What is something that you absolutely loved being a part of at Emanuel? What positives do you think the new science and dining building will add to the school? Why is it important to have modern facilities for pupils? As much as the old DT and Science blocks will be how I remember a lot of my time at Emanuel, I really look forward to seeing how the school has changed since I was a pupil, and how it can develop for current and future students!

What are you studying and where?
Business Management with Marketing at the University of Leeds. I am currently in my third and final year of studies.

I studied maths and physics at A level taught by Mr Leadbetter, Mr Hale, Mr King and Dr Dancy. The standard of teaching was amazing and it was clear that they not only wanted us to achieve great exam results, but to understand what we were learning in depth. It wasn’t always about getting the right answer, but I was encouraged to build my curiosity and try to understand the process of reaching it.

Science is extremely important in the development of new technologies, solving practical problems and generally understanding the world around us.

At Emanuel, I tried to get involved in as many things as possible, especially anything sport related! Outside the classroom, rowing and hockey gave me the opportunity to find some amazing friends and take part in many competitions. I have maintained this mindset at university and have got involved in as many sports and projects as possible. Emanuel taught me that school isn’t just about the academic side but pushing you out of your comfort zone and saying yes to new things.

The new science building will create a modern environment in which students can learn, creating a more hands on experience with up-to-date technology. I think this will help boost motivation amongst pupils, allowing them to find their passion in STEM and potentially pursue a career within this field. New facilities, equipment and extra space dedicated to science is key to unlocking academic potential and inspiring future scientists.
