I’m doing a four-year integrated masters (MChem) in Chemistry at New College, University of Oxford.<\/p>\n
I chose to study chemistry because I find the subject both interesting and challenging, but also because I am a big believer in tackling the climate crisis and environmental issues more broadly through innovation and problem-solving rather than just despairing at gloomy statistics. I believe chemistry is at the forefront of this, particularly in the synthesis of sustainable materials.<\/p>\n
I think science is key to improving people’s quality of life and that scientific progress can offer hope and a constructive way forward for mankind. On a smaller scale, I think learning more about the way the world around us works can be grounding. I feel it helps people live in the moment by teaching them to appreciate all the research and innovation that has gone into every area of their daily lives.<\/p>\n
My teachers at Emanuel always encouraged me in my pursuit of science. They especially pushed me to look beyond the constraints of the A level course to gain a deeper understanding of topics which the examined material only skims. This was very helpful for someone like me who wanted to go further in a scientific field!<\/p>\n
One thing I really love about chemistry is how as you study it further, your understanding constantly deepens. As you revisit topics with a wider understanding, you learn things at a greater depth and make new connections between ideas which help you gain a more synoptic understanding.<\/p>\n
At Emanuel, I loved having the opportunity to hear from OEs who’d gone into different study and career areas. This was not just because it was inspiring and made you feel you could do the same, but also because it introduced you to new fields and career paths you might not even have known about. I especially enjoyed hearing from Mark Miodownik, whose book I had already read but hearing from him in person made me consider more seriously a future in material sciences and sustainable chemistry.<\/p>\n
A new science building could enhance the practical, hands-on parts of the course and help inspire a passion for the sciences in pupils who might not have otherwise considered it. A new dining hall could also help students take a break from their studies and socialise, which is also important!<\/p>\n
Generally, more modern facilities in science help give students a more accurate picture of what to expect if they choose to go forward with STEM studies and help enhance the experience for all pupils.<\/p>\n
