I am studying Natural Sciences at the University of Bath, majoring in pharmacology with a minor in biochemistry. As part of my degree, I am also currently undertaking a year-long work placement at GSK, where I am working as a lab scientist in the immunology department.

I chose Natural Sciences because I knew I wanted to pursue something in STEM but wanted to have the flexibility to explore different options. The structure of my degree allowed me to take modules across multiple different departments, which helped me better understand where my interests lay. The flexibility was really great for me, as I started off studying a lot of chemistry within my degree. Now I have moved more towards life sciences, which I wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise. I also liked having the option to do a year in industry, and I knew that this was something that the University of Bath was very well known for and would be well equipped to support me with.

I really enjoy working in the lab and would be keen to pursue a career in immunology research.

I think science is important because it helps us understand the world around us, and what we are able to do with new research can drastically improve the lives of many people.

I always enjoyed studying STEM subjects at school because I liked the way they made me think and the problem-solving skills I was able to apply to many situations. The support from my teachers also reinforced a positive experience, and there were always opportunities to stretch and challenge myself, which I found very rewarding.

I love that there is always something new to learn, and that it is applied in everyday life. Within my current placement, I am really enjoying having the opportunity to use new technologies and develop a deeper understanding of immunology through first-hand experience.

I really liked all the opportunities that were available to us as pupils. I loved being a part of the boathouse and the sense of community that existed within that space. I always really looked forward to training with the team.

Hopefully, having more science classrooms will encourage more pupils to pursue STEM related subjects, and modern facilities will help pupils to learn to the best of their ability.
